I love styling trouser pants as workwear. They look chic and stylish in a professional environment. But what if you don’t need to dress up for work? Can you still wear trouser pants? Of course! That’s why today I wanted to share how to wear black trousers casually.

As a work-from-home mom, I rarely find myself in formal or dressy situations. My life is pretty laid-back, and I dress casually most of the time. Although I love styling workwear outfits, I don’t usually wear them outside of the home. But that doesn’t mean I can’t incorporate those workwear pieces into my everyday life.
In fact, mixing dressy or elevated pieces with casual styles is one of the best ways to elevate your everyday look. I truly believe that almost anything in your wardrobe can be dressed up or down to some extent—and black trousers are one of those pieces you can definitely make work for a casual outfit.
Today, I’m styling my favorite pair of black trousers. I bought these Wit & Wisdom trousers during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale over the summer. I’ve styled them in a few workwear posts and included them in my Teacher Capsule Wardrobe a few months ago, but I hadn’t actually worn them in my day-to-day life until recently.
The other day, I was wearing comfy sweatpants around the house and just didn’t feel as put-together as I wanted to. So, I swapped them for these comfortable trousers—and I instantly felt more polished and stylish.

How to Wear Black Trousers Casually
1,) Black Trousers + Cozy Neutral Sweater + Black Converse
The first casual trouser outfit I styled was pairing my black trousers with a cozy neutral sweater. This tunic sweater is from Old Navy, and I’ve actually bought one almost every year! The one I’m wearing here is from last season, but it’s very similar to the versions they have this year. (Heads up—the sweater does tend to shrink a bit in the wash, which actually makes it a great length for wearing with jeans and trousers.)
For shoes, I love pairing sneakers with black trousers to create a more relaxed, casual vibe. I always look for a sneaker with a narrower shape, though. As I mentioned in my post What Shoes to Wear with Wide-Leg Jeans?, a narrow sneaker helps elongate your legs—especially if you’re on the shorter side. My black Converse are the perfect choice for this outfit and give it that effortless, laid-back feel while still looking polished.
2.) Black Trousers + Lightweight Crew Neck Sweater + Denim Jacket + Adidas Sambas
Another easy way to style black trousers casually is to pair them with a lightweight crew-neck sweater. You can find these sweaters just about anywhere, and they’re perfect for layering during transitional seasons. I added my favorite denim jacket on top for a relaxed, effortless look that still feels put together.
To finish the outfit, I slipped on my Adidas Sambas—another great narrow sneaker option that works perfectly with wide-leg trousers. The mix of casual and classic pieces makes this outfit one of my go-tos for running errands or grabbing lunch while still feeling stylish and comfortable.
3.) Black Trousers + 1/4 Zip Athletic Top + White Sneakers
For this outfit, I paired my black trousers with a top I typically wear with my workout clothes. This 1/4 zip top is the perfect length to wear with trousers and gives the outfit a relaxed, sporty vibe.
For shoes, I went with my white sneakers—always a great choice with wide-leg pants. They keep the look casual and comfortable while still feeling polished enough to wear out and about.
4.) Black Trousers + Cropped Cardigan + Striped Tank Top + Adidas Sambas
For this last outfit, I paired my black trousers with a striped built-in-bra tank top from Amazon and layered a cropped cardigan over it. The length of this cardigan works perfectly with the trousers—I like my cardigans to hit just below the waist to create a balanced silhouette.
For shoes, I again went with my Adidas Sambas. The stripes on the shoes tie in nicely with the striped tank, giving the outfit a cohesive and casual look.
