Have you ever been told that you can’t wear navy and black together? Well, I’m here to tell you that you definitely CAN wear navy and black together! Today I’m going to be starting a series called Fashion Rules to Break. Throughout this series, I will be exploring some of the fashion rules that society has placed on us and share why you need to start breaking these rules to help elevate your style!

Why you should break fashion rules?
Growing up, many of us were taught a set of “fashion rules” that seemed as ingrained in our brains as the ABCs. I explored some of these rules in a post a few years back in a post called 5 Fashion Rules to Forget! Whether they were passed down at home or picked up from friends at school, these guidelines have followed us into adulthood, shaping our style along the way. However, more often than not, these rules have acted as barriers rather than guides, restraining our creativity and holding us back from truly expressing ourselves.
While some fashion rules may offer helpful suggestions for navigating the world of style, they should never be treated as gospel. I’ve found that these so-called rules can often feel overly restrictive, leading many women to overanalyze and second-guess their outfit choices.
Personally, I’ve always disliked the word “can’t,” and that’s one thing that all these fashion rules seem to have in common. “You can’t wear white after Labor Day,” they say. “You can’t mix your metals, or pair brown with black, or navy with black.” The list goes on and on. But what if we replaced “can’t” with “CAN”? Imagine the incredible outfits we could create if we approached fashion with a sense of possibility rather than limitation.
How to Wear Navy and Black Together
Navy and black are often one of those color combinations that we are told don’t go together. I’m not sure why because the two dark colors complement each other very nicely! I believe that navy and black can create a very chic look when paired. The key to making navy and black work, I think, is keeping the outfits simple and clean. Here are three outfit ideas I have put together styling navy and black.
Outfit 1: Navy and white polka dot top + Black jeans
This navy and white polka dot top is one of my favorites! I bought it a couple of years ago at LOFT (similar shirt HERE). It’s nice to have a simple pattern to add a little more detail to the top. I paired it with my new favorite pair of black kick-flare jeans from Express! To complete the look I went with my black-capped slingback flats, which work perfectly with the look.

Outfit 2: Navy ruffled sleeve top + Black pleated skirt
This ruffled sleeve top from Amazon is the perfect elevated basic top! I paired it with a pleated black skirt (similar HERE). I like that this skirt has a satin material which gives it a nice texture. To complete the look I added a belt and some strappy block heel sandals.

Outfit 3: Navy Blazer + Black wide-leg pants + Black t-shirt
A navy blazer is an essential in my closet. I opted to pair my navy blazer with an all-black base outfit. I chose to go with wide-leg cropped pants (similar), but you could create this same look with any style of black pants. Or try a black dress, skirt, or even shorts. For shoes, I always feel that a nude color works best with this navy and black color combination. It brightens up the look and pulls all the colors together nicely.
