If you are new to my mom-friendly capsule wardrobe series that I do here at TWHL, then let me tell you a little about it! Each season, I put together an easy-to-style mom capsule wardrobe to help moms feel a little more put together in their everyday lives.
I believe that getting dressed should be the easiest part of your day, yet so many women, especially moms, feel overwhelmed by what to wear. Having a capsule wardrobe can help take the guesswork out of getting dressed. With a few versatile, go-to pieces, you’ll always have something to wear that makes you feel confident and put together, without the stress of sorting through a cluttered closet.
What’s in the Mom Winter Capsule Wardrobe?
This winter, I am resharing many of my favorite pieces that I have featured in prior capsule posts. I try my best to make my capsule posts flow into each other. If you have been following along with my previous capsules, you should be able to pair many of the winter capsule pieces with items you have already gathered from my other seasons of capsule posts.
One thing I’ve been doing in my winter wardrobe this year is revisiting some of those trends from the past that I’ve always loved. Tall boots with skinny jeans is a combination I’ve been wearing a lot. I’ve always loved that look, and it’s been making a bit of a comeback this year, so I am all about it.
I’ve also been incorporating scarves into my outfits to accessorize and add patterns and colors. My favorite way to wear them is simply to drape them around my neck and let them hang loosely. This way is effortless and chic, adding just the right touch of interest to any outfit.
Tops
- Basic Black Top (small) – I always start off with a basic black top each season. Something that you can easily wear on its own or layer over. For winter, I like a long-sleeve top—something that’s fitted but not too tight. This long-sleeve ribbed top from Amazon is my current favorite basic top! I love the fit and material.
- Light Cable Knit Sweater (small) – I love a lighter material sweater in the winter. I bought the one I’m sharing here a few months ago at Target. Unfortunately, it’s sold out in most sizes, but I did find some similar styles HERE and HERE! I find big, bulky sweaters harder to wear under coats. Something that is a bit thinner is easy to layer. You can even layer a cardigan or blazer over it if you like!
- Pop of Color Elevated Top (small) – I always like an elevated top in my capsule—something that can dress up your outfit. I decided to go with this purple ribbed top with puff sleeves. I like that this top is easy to layer and does a great job of dressing up a casual outfit.
- Graphic Sweatshirt (small) – I usually include some sort of graphic T-shirt or sweatshirt in my capsule wardrobes. This season, I had to share my favorite sweatshirt at the moment: my Detroit Football sweatshirt. Growing up in Detroit, I’ve always loved the Lions, and it’s so fun to see so many people excited about their season this year. I found this one on Etsy! I thought it was cute and unique. Of course, you can replace this with any sweatshirt you like, but for me, when it comes to graphic tops, I always want them to represent me in some way or another.
- Turtleneck Tunic Sweater (small) – I wear leggings a lot in the winter, so I wanted to include a longer tunic sweater. I recently found this turtleneck tunic sweater on Amazon, and I’ve been wearing it a ton. I like that it’s soft, keeps me warm, and is very comfortable.
Layers
- Striped Lady Cardigan (small)- I included a striped lady cardigan in both my Spring and Fall capsules of 2024. So, if you already have that one, you’re all set! However, I recently got this striped lady cardigan from Amazon, and it’s slightly different from my other one, so I decided to include it in this capsule. What I like about this style of sweater is that you can wear it in multiple ways, and it can really elevate your outfit. You can even dress up a pair of sweatpants with a cardigan like this.
- Coatigan (small)- My coatigan from Amazon is one of my favorite layering pieces in my closet. I included it in both my Winter and Spring capsules and decided to add it again this year.
- Camel Wool Coat (x-small/petite)- My camel wool coat from Abercrombie is one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe. In past years, I included two coats in my capsules: a practical warm coat and an elevated coat. This year, I skipped the practical warm coat, assuming that if you live in a cold climate, you already have the basics. What I find most women are missing in their wardrobe is an elevated winter coat—something that is warm but also stylish. It can be worn to work or church and look polished with dress clothes, but it can also elevate your daily casual style.
Bottoms
- Straight-Leg Jeans (24/petite) – Straight-leg jeans are a staple in my winter wardrobe. I love being able to switch up my silhouettes, and this pair from LOFT is one of my favorites. I prefer my straight-leg jeans to have a bit of a cropped length, even in the wintertime. I know a lot of women struggle to style cropped jeans in the winter because they don’t like having cold ankles. If that’s a challenge for you, check out my blog post, How to Wear Cropped Jeans in Winter, for styling tips.
- Skinny Jeans (2/short) – Skinny jeans are a classic! I wear them frequently in the winter because they’re the most practical winter jeans. They pair perfectly with tunics and are the easiest jeans to wear with boots, especially tall ones. My favorite skinny jeans are from Express.
- Black Straight-Leg Jeans (25/short) – Black jeans are another winter staple for me. These black jeans from Abercrombie are a repeat from my fall capsule wardrobe. I love how they help elevate my everyday style while being so versatile.
- Fleece-Lined Leggings (xsmall) – Fleece-lined leggings are a game-changer in the winter! I bought this pair from Amazon last year and wore them all the time. Leggings are my go-to bottoms when it’s snowy and cold, but most leggings aren’t very warm. With regular leggings, you can feel the wind right through them, so having fleece insulation is a huge plus!
- Olive Green Joggers (xsmall) – These joggers are another repeat from the fall. I wear them constantly because they’re so soft and comfortable. I always say that the key to styling joggers in a cute way is to make sure they fit well. If joggers are too baggy, they can look sloppy, so I usually size down for a more tailored fit.
Shoes
- Tall Riding Boots (7.5)- I have been all about tall boots this winter! Back in the early 2010s, I wore riding boots all the time and realized how much I enjoyed my winter wardrobe back then. Tall boots can truly elevate your look, and I’ve always loved how they pair with skinny jeans and leggings. Flat riding boots are such a great, polished option to have in your winter wardrobe. I’ve been loving this pair from Amazon—they’re stylish, versatile, and comfortable!
- Neutral Block Heel Booties (7.5)- Another great elevated boot to add to your winter wardrobe is a pointed-toe bootie. I personally love a lighter tan or taupe color, but black or brown are great options to suit your style needs. This pair from Amazon is fantastic for pairing with all styles of jeans, making it an incredibly versatile choice.
- Chelsea Boots (7.5)- Chelsea boots have been a winter staple in my wardrobe for the past four years or so. I love having a practical shoe that works well in snow and bad weather while still being stylish. While I adore my Nordstrom Chelsea boots, this year I picked up a pair from Amazon, and I’m really impressed! They’re a bit more narrow in the ankle, which I like because it makes them look sleek with cropped straight-leg jeans.
- Adidas Samba Sneakers (men’s 6)- My Adidas Samba sneakers were one of my favorite purchases of 2024, and they’re still going strong in my wardrobe! They go with everything, and I wear them frequently during the winter months, especially when there isn’t much snow on the ground. They’re the perfect mix of casual and stylish!
Accessories
- Boot Socks– Boot socks are an absolute must for me during the winter months. When it’s cold outside, I wear these socks with everything—not just boots! They do an excellent job of keeping my ankles warm, which is essential during chilly days. I also like to have a few tall crew socks on hand. While I usually prefer no-show socks, I’ll opt for crew socks when it’s particularly cold and I want to ensure my ankles stay cozy.
- Black Belt– A black belt is such a versatile accessory and an easy way to elevate any outfit. This one from Amazon is a favorite of mine. It’s stylish and practical, and you can even purchase it in a set to get another color if you’d like more variety!
- Plaid Scarf– A cute plaid scarf is a must in my winter wardrobe accessory collection. I picked a black and white buffalo plaid scarf for this capsule. The colors go with everything and I enjoy a simple pattern like this.
