I’m so excited to share today’s post! My back-to-school teacher capsule wardrobe is one of my favorite posts to put together. I had so much fun picking out the pieces for this capsule and styling all the outfits, so I can’t wait to share it all with you today!
Why a teacher capsule wardrobe?
Capsule wardrobe posts have become a staple in my content here at TWHL. It all started back in 2022 when I shared my first official teacher capsule wardrobe post. I had always shared affordable teacher outfits in late summer when school starts back up, but I had never thought to put together a capsule wardrobe.
I was shocked by the response I got! People loved having a smaller selection of pieces to choose from and using the capsule and outfit inspiration to help them get dressed throughout the school year.
I was a teacher myself for many years, as a Head Start teacher, and I always enjoyed figuring out what outfits would work best for me in the classroom. I spent six hours of my day with the children. We ate two meals together, went outside twice a day, sat on the floor, painted, did crafts—you get the idea! I had to find that balance between looking professional and cute while still being comfortable and practical.
That’s exactly what I kept in mind when putting together this teacher capsule wardrobe. My hope is that it gives you that same balance and makes getting dressed for school a little easier.
What’s different about this year’s Teacher Capsule Wardrobe?
This year, I wanted to switch things up a little. Instead of giving you a list of links and a bunch of outfit ideas, I wanted to give you a blueprint for actually using your capsule wardrobe.
I picked out 20 versatile pieces that can easily be mixed and matched throughout the school year. But I’m not stopping at showing you the pieces. I’m going to show you exactly how I would mix and match them to create weeks of outfits.
You’ll find a wardrobe checklist that you can use to shop your own closet first and figure out what pieces you might be missing. Then, instead of sharing all the outfit inspiration in a random order like I’ve done in the past, I’ve organized the outfits into weekly outfit plans.
Think of this post as your back-to-school wardrobe guide. You don’t have to follow every outfit exactly or wear the looks on the exact days I’ve assigned them. The weekly plans are there to give you a starting point and show you just how many different outfits you can create from a small, versatile wardrobe.
Use what you already own, substitute similar pieces, switch up the shoes, and make the outfits work for your own style and school dress code.
What’s in the Teacher Capsule Wardrobe?
Now let’s get into the pieces! I put together this capsule with 20 versatile pieces that can easily be mixed and matched to create outfits throughout the school year. I wanted to include a good mix of comfortable basics, polished pieces and layers that can easily transition as the weather changes.
Before you start shopping, shop your closet first! I created a Teacher Capsule Wardrobe Checklist that you can use to go through your own wardrobe and check off any similar pieces you already own. Remember, you don’t need the exact pieces I’m wearing to recreate these outfits. The goal is to use this capsule as a guide and work with what you already have.
Once you’ve gone through your closet, you can use my shopping options below to help fill in any holes. For each piece in the capsule, I’m sharing three different shopping options at different price points, including the exact item I’m wearing when it’s still available.
That way, whether you already have most of these pieces in your closet or you’re looking to add a few new things for the school year, you can build a capsule wardrobe that works for your style and your budget.

Tops:
I almost always start my capsule wardrobes with five top options. For this capsule, I tried to include a good mix of elevated tops that work well for the classroom. I wanted pieces that could be dressed up for work, but still worn casually on the weekends. Here are the five top styles I picked for this capsule.
- Olive green striped top: I love stripes, and I have always loved olive green for fall, so this was an easy choice. When I found this ribbed olive green striped top at maurices, I knew I wanted to include it in the capsule.
Shop this style: maurices | LOFT | Old Navy - Short sleeve sweater: I love having a short sleeve sweater for fall. It’s a little more elevated than a regular T-shirt, but it’s still lightweight and comfortable enough for the classroom. I’ve been loving my cashmere short sleeve sweater from Quince.
Shop this style: Quince | Amazon| Target - Pink elevated top: I always like to include a fun top that can dress up an outfit without feeling overly dressy. This pink top from Kohl’s was exactly what I was looking for, and I love that it can easily be dressed down with jeans too.
Shop this style: Kohl’s | Amazon | Kohl’s - Navy elevated top: I found this navy button-front top with ruffle sleeves at Kohl’s and had to work it into the capsule. I know not everyone can wear sleeveless tops to work, but if you can, it’s a great option for early fall and can easily be layered as the weather gets cooler. You don’t need this exact top—look for a navy button-front blouse or another elevated navy top.
Shop this style: Kohl’s | Kohl’s | Amazon - Gray pinstripe button-down: As always, I wanted to include a button-down shirt. They’re so versatile and instantly give an outfit a more professional look. I’ve always found that good button-down shirts can be hard to come by, but I think I finally found a really good one! This Oxford button-down from Quince is such nice quality.

Layers:
One important piece in this capsule are layers. Layers are an important part of this teacher capsule wardrobe because, let’s face it, most classrooms are freezing! I remember when I was teaching in Las Vegas, it would be 110 degrees outside, but my classroom would be 60 degrees. Having layers that you can easily take on and off throughout the day is key. Here are the three layering pieces I included in this capsule.
- Denim jacket: I don’t know a teacher who doesn’t own a denim jacket! They are timeless and work so well layered over almost anything. I’m styling my denim jacket from Quince throughout this post, but I’m also sharing a couple of my other favorite denim jackets, including some updated styles if you’re looking for something a little different from a classic denim jacket.
Shop this style: Quince| Gap | Quince Chore Jacket - Neutral Blazer: I think a good neutral blazer is a must-have wardrobe staple. It’s classic and instantly elevates an outfit. I had to include the Honor blazer I designed with DEAR JOHN Denim in this capsule because I designed it with practicality and versatility in mind. I chose a lighter neutral shade so it would go with everything and added a fun pink stripe on the inside for a little pop of color. I love how this blazer looks and feels on, so of course I had to include it! If your closet is missing this staple, I’m also sharing a few other neutral blazer options I love. - Cropped Cardigan: My favorite cardigan style lately has been a cropped button-front cardigan. I love having something that can be worn open, buttoned up as a top or even thrown over your shoulders. My Quince cropped cardigan has actually been a part of my last four capsule wardrobe posts because it’s just that versatile! It’s the perfect layering piece.

Bottoms:
When I polled my teacher followers on Instagram, one thing that surprised me was that most of them preferred pants over skirts. Personally, I love skirts for comfort, but pants seem to be the favorite for year-round classroom wear. With that in mind, I chose a variety of pants for this capsule that can easily be mixed and matched with all of the tops and layers.
- Navy pants: I love navy pants for work. I went with a comfortable pair of cropped wide-leg pants from Quince, and these really are the perfect teacher pants. They feel like sweatpants but still look polished enough for work. Here are a couple of other shopping options if you need a pair of navy pants for your capsule.
Shop this style: Quince | LOFT | Kohl’s - Gray jeans: I had a hard time deciding between gray or brown jeans for this capsule, but I ultimately settled on gray because I think it’s a little more versatile. I went with my relaxed straight-leg jeans from Quince. They’re so comfortable, and the gray goes with so much in my closet beyond the pieces in this capsule.
Shop this style: Quince | Amazon | Kut from the Kloth - Pop-of-color green pants: I always love adding a pop-of-color pant to my capsules, and olive green is a favorite of mine for fall. I chose a pair of cropped trouser-style pants from Gap Factory. They’re a fun way to add some color while still being really easy to mix and match with neutrals.
Shop this style: Gap Factory | Quince | LOFT - Barrel jeans: Don’t hate me, but I wanted to include barrel jeans in this capsule for a couple of reasons. First, this is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere at the moment. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan when I first saw them, but now that the trend has had some time to evolve, I think there are some really cute options that aren’t overwhelming. Second, I like to encourage you to step outside of your style comfort zone every once in a while and try something new! My barrel jeans are from Gap Factory, and I styled them in this post: Trends to Try: How to Style Barrel Jeans. And if barrel jeans just aren’t for you, that’s okay! Pick a cute pair of jeans from your closet and use those for this part of the capsule instead.
Shop this style: Gap Factory | Quince | Abercrombie - Taupe trousers: I think trousers are such a classic style of work pants. You really can’t go wrong with them. For teacher workwear, they can easily be dressed down with flats or sneakers while still looking polished for the classroom. I especially love a lighter neutral like taupe or tan because it works with so many colors. My trousers are from Quince, but I don’t have an exact link to them, so I’m sharing a few similar options instead.

One piece
This is a category that you can definitely add to. I picked out one dress for this capsule wardrobe, but you can add as many as you like. The shoes and layering pieces in this capsule would work with almost any dress you already own.
- Chambray dress: For my dress, I picked a classic chambray dress because I think it’s such a great teacher staple. A cute chambray dress can go a long way in your wardrobe, especially when you can wear it on its own or add a cardigan, blazer or denim jacket. Mine is from a store called 89th and Madison, and I shared more about the brand in this post HERE last year. I especially love a soft chambray fabric because it feels comfortable enough for the classroom while still looking polished.

Shoes
I tried to keep the shoes really practical this year. I went with all flat options that are comfortable and easy to wear throughout the day. Of course, you can choose whatever shoe styles work best for you and your personal style, but these are some of my favorite options at the moment.
- Brown sneakers: I saw these brown and pink Adidas Gazelle sneakers during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and had to grab them. I think they are such a fun sneaker for fall and would be perfect for the classroom. They add a little color while still being really easy to style with the rest of the capsule.
Shop this style: Adidas Gazelle | Walmart | Quince - Neutral Mary Jane flats: I love Mary Jane flats. I think the little strap across the foot makes them feel a little more interesting than a basic flat. You could choose any neutral color you like, but I went with brown for this capsule. I love this pair from Dream Pairs because they are really comfortable and actually have a good amount of support.
Shop this style: Dream Pairs | Target | Old Navy - Neutral ballet flats: One of my favorite shoe styles in my closet is a neutral ballet flat. I love a nude or taupe shade that can go with almost any outfit. I thrifted the Sam Edelman Felicia Ballet Flats this past year and I wear them all the time. They are such an easy, classic option for work.

Accessories
For accessories, I wanted to include a few fun pieces that you can use to add a little more detail to your outfits. Accessories are such an easy way to change up the look of an outfit without adding a lot more pieces to your capsule wardrobe.
- Tan belt: A belt is always a must for me. I include one in almost every capsule wardrobe I put together. I usually recommend grabbing an Amazon belt set that comes with two colors because I love having options in my wardrobe. For this capsule, I went with the tan belt from one of my favorite Amazon belt sets.
Shop this style: Amazon Belt Set | Amazon Belt Set 2 | Amazon Belt - Statement necklace: Statement necklaces are making a comeback, and I am here for it! I love having a bigger, chunkier necklace option in my wardrobe to add a little more interest to a simple outfit. For this capsule, I went with a simple white necklace because it works so well with all of the colors in the collection, but you can choose any color or style that suits you.
Shop this style: Amazon (white) | Amazon (white with heart) | LOFT (multi-color) - Bandana scarf: Another trend that is making a comeback is scarves. Not the big infinity scarves or blanket scarves, but smaller bandana-style scarves. They have been everywhere this year, and I really wanted to include one in this capsule. I tried to style it in a few different ways throughout the outfit ideas so you can see how much it can change up a look.
