Helping women love what they wear on a budget

3 Casual Short Outfits

April 6, 2018 by Katie Haller

For today’s post, I want to talk about jean shorts.  I don’t think that I’ve had a pair of jean shorts that I’ve loved since the late ’90s.  I don’t love shorts that much.  I always preferred pants and dresses.  I can’t remember what I wore in high school, but I’m pretty sure I usually wore jeans.  In college, I remember wearing a lot of jean skirts…Laguna Beach style, Abercrombie jean skirts to be exact.  It wasn’t until the last couple of summers that I’ve been really wanting to find a good pair of jean shorts that I could wear with everything.

If I didn’t care about how much money I spent on my clothes, a search for the right pair of shorts would have been easy, but since I’m the thrifty shopper that I am, I had to find a pair of shorts at the right price.  I had bought a couple pairs of shorts at thrift stores that I’ve worn the last couple of summers and they were fine, but I didn’t love them.  They were either too short or too tight.  This spring I decided I was just going to find a pair of shorts that I really liked, but I set my budget at $15. I did some browsing at my favorite stores like Target and Old Navy, but I didn’t love what I saw. Over spring break, I decided to take a trip to the mall.  I rarely go to the mall, but I wanted to see what the selection looked like.  I found myself at Charlotte Russe.  They had a great selection of jean shorts and they were all on sale for $15.  I was so happy when I found this pair HERE. They had the perfect length that I was looking for, with the right amount of distress to them, plus they fit me perfectly!
Since I don’t get to wear my jean shorts to work, I usually just wear them on the weekend.  Today, I put together 3 casual weekend outfits that I know I’ll be wearing this spring.

First up is this simple long-sleeve Old Navy top that I thrifted from the Goodwill (Similar HERE).  I love wearing my converse (exact HERE) in the spring and summer with my shorts.  This is the perfect weekend errand running look.

I love to wear lightweight cardigans in the spring over a tank top.  I bought this cardigan when I was pregnant at Nordstrom Rack (similar HERE).  I think the light colors are perfect for the spring.  I wore it over a high neck tank top I bought last year at Old Navy (similar HERE).  For shoes, I wanted to try out wearing my peep-toe booties with my shorts.  These Target shoes were thrifted from ThredUp (similar HERE).

I love gingham and I just love how it looks with this color of jeans.  This gingham shirt was a Target clearance find from a few years back (similar HERE), and it’s been a staple in my closet ever since.  I found these $4 leopard flip flops at Charlotte Russe when I bought my shorts (exact HERE but the leopard print is sold out.  I love the blush HERE as a second choice.)  I couldn’t believe that I didn’t have an everyday pair of flip flops that weren’t the cheap Old Navy foam flip flops.

Unfortunately, the $15 sale looks like it’s over, but they are still under $25.  If you want to find a good pair of jean shorts for this summer, I’ve rounded up a few pairs under $25 for you below.  Happy Shopping everyone!

How to Organize Your Time With a Planner

April 2, 2018 by Katie Haller

How to organize your time with a planner #organzining

I mentioned earlier this year that one of my goals for 2018 was to organize my time better.  Well, we are 4 months into the year, and let’s just say that organization is an ongoing goal for me.  I have so much going on, that sometimes I struggle with getting all my thoughts out and completing all the tasks that I need to be done.  Between work, taking care of my family, cleaning, cooking, and blogging…I tend to get overwhelmed.

*This post is part of a collaboration with Transcending Waves Planners.  Although I was gifted this item, all opinions are 100% my own.

How to get organized using a planner

One thing that has helped me out a lot with staying organized and on task, is using a planner.  I used a planner all through high school and college and it was always helpful.  As an adult, I stopped using a planner.  I guess I didn’t see a need for it.  My husband is always trying to get me to use my phone to keep me organized, but there is only so much my phone can do for me.  There is just something about using pen and paper and actually writing things down.

Recently, I’ve been using my Transcending Waves planner, and let me tell you, this planner is a game-changer.  Earlier this year I bought a simple planner at TJMaxx and it was great.  It had a calendar for each month and the weeks, but it was missing so much.  When I got my Transcending Waves planner, I got really excited because it had all the features I was looking for.  It breaks down the months, weeks, days, and even the hours.  They have places to write down your goals and projects, what action steps you need to take, distractions to avoid, and even a spot to say what you’re grateful for.  One feature I like the most is the morning plan page and the nightly review.  It helps you make your plans and then at the end of the day, you can evaluate how productive you were and make changes for the next day.

How to get organized using a planner

How to get organized using a planner

So what kind of things do I use my planner for?  I use it for pretty much everything in my life, but here is a list.

Meal planning
I find it so important to meal plan, especially with a full-time job.  When I come home at night, I like to know exactly what we are having for dinner.  Every weekend, I write down what I have in the house, and then I plan out my grocery shop list.  Then I write down in my planner what I’m making for dinner each day.  It’s very helpful.

Work Paper Work
I work for a Headstart Preschool program, which is funded through the federal government.  If you have ever worked for a government agency you know that it’s a lot of paperwork.  I do daily observations on the children, write individual lesson plans every week, lesson plans, keep behavior trackers, parent-teacher conference/ home visit reports 4 times a year, 2 screenings…my list goes on.  So yes, it takes some organization in the classroom.  I like to use my planner to plan what I’m going to do during my class time and my planning time after the kids go home.  I try to break down the paperwork so it doesn’t pile up.

Workout Plans
After becoming a mom, I have become a total slacker with working out.  With summer around the corner and bathing suit season approaching, I’ve been trying to make some changes and add a little exercise to my daily routine.  I’m starting out slow, but I like to keep track of it in my planner to stay on top of it.  I record what I did each day, so I know the next day what to work on.

Blog work and Social media
I love blogging.  I’m passionate about it and it’s so fun for me.  Now that I have been working with brands and using affiliate links in my blog, blogging has become much more than just a little hobby.  It’s hard to keep up with all 4 of my major social media platforms, emails and promoting my blog posts.  I use my planner to plan out what posts I’m putting out each month.  Then I record where I’ve promoted my posts.  I write down what sponsored posts are coming up and what brands I’d like to contact. It’s a lot to keep up with, but my planner really helps me with organizing all that.

Cleaning Schedule
Cleaning is my least favorite responsibility, but it’s one of those things that need to get done.  I like to schedule out in my planner what rooms I’m going to clean every week.  I try to keep a list of cleaning projects in my planner and I cross them off as I complete them.

Those are the things I write down in my planner.  Do you use a planner to stay organized?  You can use the code THRIFTYWIFEHAPPYLIFE to get 10% off of a Transcending Waves Planner.  They are only $19.99, which I think is a pretty great price for all the features it offers. I hope you will check them out!!

Making the Most of Your Wardrobe- Chambray Shirt

March 29, 2018 by Katie Haller

One of my many wardrobe staples in my closet is my chambray button-down shirt.  It’s one of those clothing pieces that you should have in your closet because it’s so versatile.  I wear mine with skirts, jeans, leggings, even as a cover-up over dresses and tops.  On one of my recent thrift store trips to Savers, I found an H&M chambray top for $3.50.  I really fell in love with how flowy and soft the material was. My other chambray shirt is stiff and although it looks great, it’s not always super comfortable.  I also love how this top is a lighter color, which is perfect for spring.
For today’s post, I have 3 different spring outfits wearing my chambray shirt.

I’ve been obsessed with mixing denim right now.  I never thought that I would like this look so much, but I think with the 2 different washes, you can pull it off.  I styled my top by tying it, which is really popular right now.  I kept is simple and wore some nude pumps and my black satchel purse.

I always love to wear my button down shirts opened as a cover up.  I think it’s a nice alternative to always wearing my jean jacket.  To add a little color, I styled it with my coral purse.  For shoes I’m wearing my cognac peep toed booties, which are great shoes for transitioning into spring.

This look has to be my favorite.  I love how the white jeans look with the wash of this top.  I stuck with simple nude flats as my shoes and added my leopard clutch so it wouldn’t feel too boring.
Hopefully you have some inspiration for styling your chambray shirts this spring.  Below I’ve linked all the similar items that I’m wearing, which most of them are all under $30!!

Kimono Outfit for Spring

March 22, 2018 by Katie Haller

Sometimes I like to get out of my comfort zone and try out something new that I normally wouldn’t wear.  It’s always nice to get away from neutral colors and stripes every now and again.  Lately, I’ve been loving floral prints and bright spring colors.  Whenever I need a good floral print, I always like to browse my favorite online boutique, PinkBlush.  When  I came across this floral chiffon kimono (HERE), I immediately started to brainstorm all the different ways that I could wear it in the upcoming months.  I like to layer a lot, but when it’s hot out, you can’t layer up.  That’s why I felt this kimono would be the perfect way to still get away with wearing a layer over my tank tops and dresses this summer.  I figured that I could also wear it as a bathing suit cover-up as well.

For today’s look, I put together a fun spring look with distress jeans, wedge sandals, and a black tank top.  I cannot wait to wear this look!!

Making the Most of Your Wardrobe- 3 Ways to Wear a Blanket Scarf in Spring

March 19, 2018 by Katie Haller

As you may have noticed already, I’m a big fan of accessories.  Just like all of my clothes, I like my accessories to be versatile so I can wear them all the time in different ways.  I also like to think outside the box and wear most of my clothes throughout any season.  I recently bought a blanket scarf, but I was a little afraid that it was too late in the season to wear it.  That’s why I decided I would put together a few spring outfits with my new scarf.

The transitional seasons are all about the layers.  A blanket scarf is a perfect way to layer up your look.  It’s so easy to through on with a t-shirt or dress.  It’s taken me a while to find the perfect blanket scarf at the right price.  They always seem to be so pricey to me, especially in the fall.  I decided that I would hold out for the right price.  I was happy when I came across the store ILYMIX through Instagram.  Their scarves are everything I was looking for in a blanket scarf and their prices are right too!  I bought this scarf (HERE) during their 50% off Valentine’s sale.   I liked the pink and grey palette.  I felt that they would be good colors to wear year-round.

The weather in Las Vegas is warming up pretty quickly, so I may not get to wear all these spring looks very much this year, but I’m sure a lot of you still have a couple more months of unpredictable cold weather, so hopefully you can use these looks as a guide.

Spring Shoes for Less

March 13, 2018 by Katie Haller

I am such a shoe fan.  Every time I put together a list for a new season, the number one thing I always want is shoes.  My husband, who owns only 5 pairs of shoes, cannot understand my need for new shoes.  I feel like shoes are the most important part of an outfit.

This spring, I have my eye on lots of different shoe styles.  I love getting inspired by other blogger’s outfits on Instagram and Pinterest, but I always find their shoes are often out of my price range.  That’s why I always set off to find a dupe. In my opinion, the best place to find designer look-a-likes is good old Target.  I always find stylish shoes that are designer knock off’s for a fraction of the price of the real thing. Besides the price,

Today, I want to help give you a guide for your spring shoe shopping.

I love Peep toes, especially with a bootie.  I’ve been eyeing these Vince Camuto Karinta block heel booties (HERE), but with my price range being between $30-$50 per item, even with their best sale, these booties have been out of my reach.  Good thing I found an almost exact pair at Target (HERE) for only $34.99!!
While we’re talking about booties, I should mention that I also love these Vince Camuto Phandra Booties (HERE), but again I found them out of my price range.  Target has a similar pair with the same laser cuts for $33.99 (HERE).
Last summer, all I saw were espadrille wedge sandals everywhere.  I wanted a pair so bad, but I was having a hard time finding one in my price range.  The splurge pair I was looking at was the Marc Fisher LTD Adalyn Espadrille Wedges (HERE).  This year Target has an almost identical pair for only $34.99 (HERE).
I haven’t decided how I feel about mules yet, but I couldn’t ignore this dupe. These Gucci Princetown Loafer Mules (HERE) are a beautiful pair of shoes, but not everyone can afford the $680 price tag.  Target has a pretty good dupe for only $22.99 (HERE).  I don’t know about you, but I think that’s the perfect price tag for a trendy shoe like this.
These Marc Fisher Annie Perforated Wedges (HERE) are another pair of espadrille sandals that I’ve been loving. They are beautiful, but they are also $150.  Target has a similar style for $32.99 (HERE).
I keep wanting these nude colored sandals every year.  This might be the year I buy them.  I love this classic pair from Nine West (HERE), but personally, I think I like the ones from Target best (HERE).
Shop the shoes!

The Target look dupes for less

It’s up to you how much you want to spend on your shoes, but if you’re a shoe lover like myself, you might want to keep yourself on some sort of budget.  Hopefully this will help you find those great designer styles for less!

I don’t share my husband much on here, but this I don’t share my husband much on here, but this trend felt like a fun way to look back at our story! I had to dig deep on Facebook for some of these photos! 💕

He was the one who told me that shopping wasn’t a hobby and I needed to find a free hobby to keep me busy when we were first married. 😅 So I started a blog about living life to the fullest and dressing my best on a super tight budget.

Little did we know that “free hobby” would not only one day turn into my job, but it would also be a way to fund my shopping habit. Even helping me become a smarter shopper along the way! 😉

Fun fact: The name “Thrifty Wife, Happy Life” came from him. When making big decisions, Kevin always said “happy wife happy life”. So when I was brainstorming a name for my blog that popped into my head and I decided to do a little play on words. The original name I was going to pick was “Katie’s Closet”. I’m glad I went with the name I did!
