Helping women love what they wear on a budget

Outfit Planning with Metallics- Year of Color

December 15, 2017 by Katie Haller

Thrifty Wife, Happy Life- Outfit Planning with Metallics

Where did this year go?  How is it almost Christmas already?  I feel like it was just the 4th of July.

Not only is it the last month of the year, but it’s the last Year of Color link party of the year.  I joined in as a host halfway through the year, but I’ve had a lot of fun putting together different outfits to match the color theme each month.  Some were a challenge for me, while others were easy to come up with a post for.
For this month our color theme is metallic colors.
December is the perfect month for metallic colors.  I think of all the metallic decorations that the month of December brings.  Our homes are decked out in silver and gold, but what about your wardrobe?  I love adding metallic into my wardrobe this time of the year.
For today’s post, I wanted to share some outfits for the holidays with all my favorite metallic pieces in my closet.  Instead of my normal outfit posts where I model the clothes, I decided to try something a little different and do some outfit flat lays for a change.

This first look is perfect for a Christmas or New Year’s party.  I love this grey metallic skirt.  I like to wear it with my black booties and some black tights.  For this outfit, I added my favorite statement necklace that I received in my most recent Rocksbox.  I love how sparkly it is.  I think it’s the perfect way to dress up all your favorite looks this season.  If you haven’t tried a Rocksbox subscription yet, I suggest you check it out.  Use my code thriftywifehappylifexoxo and you will get one free month of a Rocksbox subscription.

This next look is casual, but the metallic accessories really dress it up.  My mom gave me this metallic gold scarf a few years ago for Christmas.  I like to wear it with a simple black sweater.  I also love this pretty little metallic purse.  I’ve had it in my closet for years.  I always feel like a statement purse can really add to an outfit.

This last outfit is with my sequin top.  I have only actually worn this top a few times and it’s always around the holidays.  I like to pair it with a black blazer and jeans.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in a Year of Color.  I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s posts and getting new ideas from all of you.  Don’t forget to link up below and share your favorite metallic color posts.

Cold Shoulder Winter Look with PinkBlush

December 13, 2017 by Katie Haller

I know that I’ve been sharing a lot of PinkBlush clothes lately, but I really can’t help myself.  I love having the opportunity to share brands that I love with all of you, and PinkBlush is just one of those brands.  Everything I have from them fits me perfectly.  I also wanted to share a variety of clothes that they sell.  They honestly have something for everyone.

When I came across this black cold shoulder tunic, I knew that I had to have it.  Black has always been my favorite color to wear.  I always say that it looks great on everyone because it does!  I love how this top has a trendy look to it with the cold shoulders, but it’s not too trendy where it might go out of style too soon.  I also love that it’s a flowy tunic.  With my first pregnancy, I barely bought any maternity clothes.  I just wore long tunics and tops that would go over my belly.  I’m always thinking about a second pregnancy when I pick out my clothes and this top will be perfect to wear again one day when it’s time for another baby.
When it comes to accessories, I have been obsessing over gold lately.  I’ve always worn silver jewelry with black, but I just love the way the gold pops against the black.
This post is part of a collaboration with PinkBlush.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Practical and Casual Weekend Look

December 9, 2017 by Katie Haller

Happy Saturday! We survived another week! I’m not sure where the month is going, but I thought that I had a lot of time before Christmas got here, but now I’m realizing that it will be here before we know it.  I still have so much to do.  I’m not going to lie, I still have so much Christmas shopping to do, but who doesn’t love a gift card? Right?

Today I wanted to share a weekend look that I’ve been wearing a lot lately while running my errands.  My weekends are usually just as busy as my weekdays because I need to fit in all the things that I didn’t have time for Monday through Friday into 2 days.  I’ve discovered that a quick way to get ready on the weekends is to throw on a baseball hat and some sunglasses with something casual.  It’s cute, it’s easy and it’s quick.  For today’s look, I wore this striped H&M sweater that I bought from ThredUp for $4.99.  I wore it with my Hollister jeans, that I bought at the Goodwill for $6 and my converse chucks that are probably my most worn shoes because they are comfortable and go with almost everything.

Making a Statement with a Pop of Leopard

December 5, 2017 by Katie Haller

If you have been following along with my outfit post this past lately, you know that it’s no secret that I love leopard print accessories.  As a blonde, I feel like I can’t always pull off too much leopard print (trust me, I tried it out in college and it didn’t work out too well), but I do love leopard when done in moderation.  My style is so simple.  I like to stick to neutrals and solid colors, but every so often I like to make a statement with my accessories, and lately, it’s been all about leopard print.
I love how you can wear leopard print with black, tan, brown or even a bright color.  It’s always my go-to print in the fall and winter.  For today’s look, I’m showing off a simple look with my black LC Lauren Conrad blouse, my skinny jeans, and nude pumps.  To make this outfit a little more fun, I added my leopard clutch from ThredUp.  This clutch is one of my favorite accessories.  It was such a good find.  I love the leopard print with the straw material.

Effortless Style with Pink Blush

December 1, 2017 by Katie Haller

This week has been one of those long, busy, exhausting weeks that I’m just happy to get through.   My in-laws came into town for Thanksgiving and we had a fun long weekend visiting with them, but Monday hit me hard.  Sometimes when I have a long period of time off work, I forget that I have a job.  I went back to work this week with a ton of parent-teacher conferences that needed to be done by the end of the week, paperwork that needed to be turned in and of course 16 crazy 4 and 5-year-olds who had been off school for a whole week.

It didn’t help that my toddler has been waking up in the middle of the night screaming his head off every night, which means I’ve been sleeping at least 3 hours of the night in a toddler bed.  He’s also started the terrible two’s, even though he still has 2 months to go until he’s officially a 2-year-old, so it’s just been hard to keep him satisfied.

It’s weeks like this that has me at a loss for what to wear in the morning.  I think a lot of moms feel this way and that’s how so many of us get into a rut with our wardrobe.  I love planning out what I’m going to wear every day, but this week I was just lucky to blow dry my hair before work.  Instead of picking out accessories and figuring out which shoes would look best, I was holding a cranky baby putting on makeup with one hand (I’m getting pretty good at this skill.)  Weeks like this make me so thankful for a store like PinkBlush.
I’m always able to find trendy fun tops that fit perfectly into my everyday wardrobe at PinkBlush.  This grey hooded lace trim sweater saved me this week when I was at a loss for what to wear.  There’s no need to worry about what kinds of accessories to wear with it because it’s perfect on its own.  I love that it has the look of a cozy sweatshirt, but it’s lightweight and not bulky.  For work this week, I wore this sweater with jeans, but when I’m home on the weekends I like to stay comfy in my leggings and that’s how I styled this look today.

Hopefully, next week will be a little less hectic, but at least I have a go-to sweater to wear.

Teacher Gifts Under $40!

November 24, 2017 by Katie Haller

Now that Thanksgiving is over, I am getting really excited for Christmas.  I’m officially ready to start my shopping.  I have to say that my favorite people to shop for are Jack’s daycare teacher.  I truly appreciate everything that they do for him, so when Christmas comes, I get excited to spoil them.  Being a teacher myself, I’ve received a lot of great teacher gifts over the years.  It’s always the thought that counts and us teachers always love to be remembered.

  This year, I’m going to try to do most of my Christmas shopping from my couch to avoid shopping the crowded stores with a toddler.  Amazon happens to be my go-to place for gifts this year, because you can find almost anything there, including great teacher gifts.  Here is a list of teacher gifts that I have my eye on this year.  Best of all, these gifts are all under $40 and most of them are under $20!!

*This post contains affiliate links, which means by clicking and/or making a purchase through a link, I will make a small commission. Thank you for your support!

One || “After School Snack” wine glass
This wine glass just cracks me up because it’s so true.  Teachers deserve to have some time to wind down from a long day with kids.
Two || Blanket Scarf
Us teacher love our scarves!  I like to give scarves as a gift because they are easy to pick out and one size fits all.
Three || Kate Spade bow bracelet
This was actually a teacher gift that I received from one of my students at the end of the year last year, so I just had to add it to my list.  Jewelry always makes a good gift.  It’s extra special when it comes to a student.
Four || Apron
I love giving and getting aprons as a gift.  I always like to wear an apron while I’m cooking or cleaning in the kitchen, but it’s not something that I would buy for myself.  That’s why it’s the perfect gift.
Five || Teacher definition makeup bag
While I was looking for a cute makeup bag, I stumbled upon this adorable teacher definition makeup bag.  This would make a great teacher gift and you could even fill it with some goodies and gift cards to go along with the gift.
Six || Kate Spade travel coffee mug
Teachers love their morning coffee and usually, we have to be to work so early that we don’t always have time to make a stop for coffee.  That’s why a travel mug makes such a great teacher gift.
Seven || Coach ID lanyard
I love these Coach lanyards.  They are perfect to wear every day with your work ID.  They are pretty popular with the teachers at my school.  If you happen to notice that your child’s teacher is wearing her work ID in a boring plastic lanyard, then this would make a perfect gift for them!
Eight || Knock Knock notepads
I personally love these little knock knock notepads.  They come in all different colors and sayings.  They help keep you on track.  I use them to keep me organized with work and blogging too. All teacher’s appreciate help with organization.

Nine || Kate Spade lunch box
A lunch box is a perfect teacher gift.  Teacher’s often have short lunch breaks and we prefer to pack our lunch.  No one likes a boring lunch bag though.  That’s why a teacher would appreciate a Kate Spade lunch box like this one.
Those are my favorite teacher gifts for this year.  Hopefully you can spoil your child’s teacher this year!

Happy Shopping!!
