I have so much fun coming up with these costume ideas! Some are inspired by other bloggers I follow, and sometimes the inspiration comes from a piece of clothing in my closet. Whether it’s the red polka dot skirt I have for my Minnie Mouse costume or the blue gingham dress I used for Dorothy, I love getting creative and seeing how everyday clothes can become a costume.
These costumes are perfect for teachers, parents who want to dress up with their kids, or anyone who needs a last-minute Halloween costume for a party! I hope you’ll save this post and come back to it year after year for inspiration. Here are my 12 easy DIY Halloween costume ideas!
Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz

If you have a blue and white gingham dress in your closet or something similar, with a red pair of shoes then you can do a Dorothy costume! Don’t forget a basket and a plush doggie for Toto!
Rosie the Riveter

Rosie the Riveter is a classic! All you need is a pair of jeans, chambray shirt, a pair of sneakers and a red bandana. I also love the makeup and hair for this one! I did a post HERE that you can check out on that! This one is so easy and so comfortable for a full day of classroom or work parties.
Sandy from Grease

This Sandy costume revolves around the moto jacket. If you have a leather jacket of some sort you can style it around with some black pants or faux leather pants and a fun heel. Don’t forget some red lips!
Minnie Mouse

This Minnie Mouse costume revolves around the red and white polka dot skirt. I found this at TJMaxx a few years back and I actually wore this costume to my daughter’s preschool classroom a few years ago.
Snow White

My Snow White costume has been such a popular one! I really went with colors here to create this costume. A yellow pleated skirt, a blue top and some red ribbon. Even if you don’t have black hair, you can still pull this one off!
Wednesday Addams

I think Wednesday Addams is a great last minute costume idea. All you need is a black dress and tights. Put some braids in your hair and some pale makeup and you have a costume.
Fairy

Whether you are going for a tooth fairy or a character like Pinkalicious, this fairy costume is super fun! I thrifted this tutu on ThredUp a couple of years ago because I have always wanted to own a pink tutu. It really comes in handy for Halloween costumes.
Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

This is another great last minute DIY costume idea. All you need is a classic black dress and some accessories. Lots of necklaces, a tiara, some long gloves and some big sunglasses. That’s what makes the perfect Holly Golightly costume.
Ariel aka The Little Mermaid

Disney characters are some of my favorite costumes to put together and I think that this Ariel costume is such a fun, but also practical way to recreate the little mermaid. You can wear any style of green skirt. I went with a pleated skirt to give the look of fins and I wore a purple sweater and red shoes to represent the colors of the Disney Ariel. I borrowed my son’s stuffed crab for my Sebastian.
Frosty the Snowman

This Frosty the snowman costume is a new one for me that I put together this year. I have this thrifted hat that my kids use for building snowmen in the winter, so I decided to wear it with all white and a scarf. I think this one would be great in the classroom.
Glinda The Good Witch

This pink tutu does come in handy for costumes. I used it for this Glinda costume here. You can always use a pink dress or pleated skirt too!
Mary Poppins

Last but not least, is my Mary Poppins. This costume was one I saw on Pinterest years ago and wanted to put together. It’s made with a black pleated skirt and white button down with some red ribbon and a hat. (My snowman hat.)
I hope this gives you some ideas for this year — and save it for later, because a new costume idea always seems to be needed at the last minute. The best part is you don’t need to buy a costume you’ll only wear once. Just open your closet and use your imagination.
