It’s time for another capsule wardrobe post! Today we are talking all about winter style. Winter can be a long season to dress for, so I love putting together a mom-friendly winter capsule wardrobe. I have filled this capsule with versatile pieces you can style for a cozy day at home or elevated for a winter night out.

If you are new to my mom-friendly capsule wardrobe series that I do here at TWHL, then let me tell you a little about it! Each season, I put together an easy-to-style mom capsule wardrobe to help moms feel more put together in their everyday lives. My goal is to make getting dressed the easiest part of your day.
I always find that less is more. A capsule wardrobe gives you a variety of clothes to wear without overwhelming your wardrobe. When building an affordable wardrobe I think it’s important to focus on versatile clothing that you can wear for any occasion. That’s why I love to put together these capsules and give you plenty of outfit ideas for the upcoming season!
How to Shop the Mom Winter Capsule Wardrobe?
My main goal for putting together my capsule wardrobe posts is that you can use them as a free guide to create your own winter capsule wardrobe with the clothes in your closet. I always recommend shopping your closet first, then you can create a wishlist of the clothes that you would like to add. You can use this capsule as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to put your spin on it.
If you do feel like you would like to add some of the pieces I share here to your wardrobe, I try to offer as many exact links as possible. (I do not update links when they sell out.) These pieces are linked in the photos that you can click on under each category. I also have linked them to the text. Anything in bold print can be clicked on and will take you directly to the site where the item is located to shop. If you follow me on the LTK shopping app, I will also have all my outfits linked HERE in my winter capsule wardrobe collection.
For sizing reference, I am 5’1 and around 115lb. I typically wear an xsmall or small in tops and a size 2/petite in pants. I wear a 7.5 shoe size. Everything fits TTS unless I state otherwise.
23 Piece Mom Winter Capsule Wardrobe
Tops:
In the wintertime, I am all about tops that are easy to layer a coat over. Lightweight sweaters, long-sleeve t-shirts, and mock neck turtle necks are some of my favorite styles. I also like to have some longer sweaters and tunics to wear with leggings.
Striped long-sleeve t-shirt (small) I love this striped Old Navy t-shirt. It’s always a great top for layering under sweaters. I love having a pop of pattern when wearing a simple sweater.
Black mock turtleneck top (small) I enjoy a nice turtle neck in the winter, but I don’t like anything too tight around my neck. That’s why this mock turtle neck top is perfect. It has short sleeves so it’s great for adding a layer over.
Tan tunic (small)- I included this Walmart tunic in my fall capsule wardrobe and it was a huge hit. Sadly it’s currently out of stock in this color. I was able to find some similar options to shop. I like to have a long tunic in my wardrobe to wear with leggings in the winter.
Henly pullover sweatshirt (small)- I have been loving this henly sweatshirt from Amazon. It’s so cozy and perfect to wear in the winter. I have been surprised by how many different ways I can style it.
Burgandy crew neck sweater (xsmall)- I wanted to add a little color to this capsule, so I went with this burgundy sweater from maurices. It’s so cozy and soft. It comes in several different color options, but I have been enjoying this dark burgundy color, especially for winter.
Striped Tunic Sweater (small)- This striped sweater from Target has been a big hit over on the LTK app. I knew I had to include it in my winter capsule wardrobe when I bought it. It’s a good length and easy to mix and match with different bottoms.
Layers and outerwear
My layer collection is always a little different in the winter. I’m not too fond of overly bulky layers because they are harder to wear a coat over. As long as I can fit the layer easily under my coat, then I will wear it. I do spend a lot of time at home in the winter, so I do like soft warm layers for wearing around the house. This is why I love cardigans in the winter.
Khaki Coatigan (small)- One of my favorite recent purchases is my coatigan. It’s a mix between a jacket and a coat. The coatigan that I have isn’t overly bulky. It layers nicely under my winter coats. It’s a trendy item that also has a classic vibe. It’s worth giving a try.
Green cardigan (xsmall)- This is another repeat from my fall capsule wardrobe. Again I wanted to have some color in the capsule. Olive green was one of my favorite colors this fall and I’m still loving it, so I added this cardigan.
Cropped cardigan (xsmall)- I love the versatility of a cropped cardigan. There are so many ways you can style one. My cardigan is from Macy’s. It’s so soft and cozy, but I believe that sizing is spotty at the moment so I have also linked a few other favorites of mine.
Outerwear
I cannot stress the importance of having cute outerwear in the winter if you live somewhere cold. Because I am in a coat all the time when I leave my house I want to wear something I love. For me, my winter coats need to be long enough to cover my outfit and my bottom. They also need to keep me warm! These 2 styles of coats are my go-to!
Green Parka coat (small)- A fur-trimmed long parka coat is key to staying warm in the winter. I don’t think that you need to spend a ton of money on a warm winter coat. As long as you have a warm hood, with a warm lining inside and the coat is long enough to cover your bottom you will be good to go!
Camel wool coat (Brown- xsmall/petite)- My camel wool coat is one of my favorite elevated coats in my closet. It can add style to any winter outfit. I bought mine on sale at Abercrombie last year, but I also have a thrifted Gap coat that I often wear. This Gap Factory coat is similar and probably the best option for the money. I also love a pop of print in a coat and I have been getting a lot of wear from my houndstooth coat from marucies. If you only own one wool coat I recommend going with a color that you will get the most wear out of year after year.
Bottoms and Sets:
For winter, I like to have a variety of pant options. Jeans that don’t drag and get wet in the snow and rain are important. I also love to wear joggers and leggings. Keeping it comfortable and cozy during the winter month is my favorite.
Ultra high-rise straight-ankle jeans (26/short)- I love my straight ankle-leg jeans from Abercrombie. They are such a cute style and fit TTS. I typically wear my cropped straight-leg jeans on mild winter days with sneakers. I also style them with a boot sock and boots if the weather is cold.
High-rise skinny jeans (2/short)- I always say skinny jeans were made for winter because they are the best and easiest jean option to wear with boots. I love this pair from Express. They are stretchy and high-waisted.
Black slim straight-leg jeans (2/short)- I have been on a hunt to find some classic affordable black jeans to style for this capsule. I ended up finding 2 pairs that fit very similarly. The first pair I am styling is from Gap Factory, but I bought them on Amazon. The other pair is from Old Navy. They fit very similarly, but I kept the Gap pair because I liked the length best.
Black joggers (xs/petite)- I wear black joggers a lot in the winter. I bought this pair from Gap Factory last year, but it’s no longer fully in stock. I ended up finding the almost exact pair at Old Navy this year. They fit the same as the joggers I am wearing in the photos below and also come in petite sizes.
Faux leather leggings (small/25 inches)- My love for faux leather leggings is still strong. I feel that the shiny look of faux leather leggings elevates my winter outfits rather than a regular cotton blend. I have the popular Spanx leggings, however, I also really love my CRZ Yoga leggings from Amazon. They are just as cute and much more affordable. I also find them to be more comfortable than the Spanx because they are less compressive and thick.
Lounge set (khaki- small)- I typically include a jumpsuit or dress in my capsule, but I don’t wear them as much in the winter. That’s why I decided to do a lounge set. I have been wearing lounge sets a lot, especially when working at home all day. They are cozy, but they are 2 pieces so you can mix and match them with other tops and bottoms in your wardrobe. This Amazon set is currently my favorite!
Shoes:
Hiking boots (7.5)- I love these boots from Target. They are the perfect winter boots for running errands. They are not my main snow boots, but work great as a stylish winter shoe option.
Chelsea boots (7.5)- My Chelsea boots are my most worn winter shoe. I love my latest pair from Nordstrom. They are water resistant and have a really cute style to them. I recently shared a post on how to style Chelsea boots with different pants if you want to go back and read that for more ideas.
Pointed-toe booties (7.5)- I wanted to add a dressier shoe option for winter. I love wearing pointed-toe booties as an alternative to pointed-toe flats or heels. I love this taupe pair of booties from Target. They also come in a black color which might be more winter weather-friendly.
White sneakers (7.5)- I love white sneakers year-round in my mom wardrobe. For winter I like to make sure that I have an easy to clean material. My favorite white sneakers are my Sam Edelman sneakers. A more affordable option is this pair from maurices, which I am wearing in this post. I also love Target sneakers.
Accessories:
The most obvious winter accessories are hats, gloves, and scarves, which to me are a given, so I did not include them in the capsule, however, I will link a few options. I did want to include 2 of my favorite winter accessories that aren’t necessarily thought of as much when thinking about winter accessories.
Baseball cap– I always include my favorite 47′ dad hat on every capsule I do because this is one of my favorite accessories in my wardrobe. I never thought I was much of a hat person until I became a mom and stopped fixing my hair every day. Now I love a hat on a casual day.
Boot socks– I love having good socks in the wintertime. These boot socks from Amazon are my current favorite pair. I like that they aren’t too high and they look cute with all my boots.
